Cruises from St Petersburg to Moscow

If Russia is, as Churchill claimed, ‘a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma’ there’s no better place to puzzle it out than aboard your luxury vessel on this cruise from Saint Petersburg to Moscow.

The sprawling city of Moscow has been the epicentre of Russian politics, economics and history for over 800 years. Your day’s touring takes you to Red Square, Central Tverskaya Street, the Cathedral of the Christ the Saviour, the Kremlin, and right outside the headquarters of the KGB. But there is far too much to see in just one day! Enjoy an extra day at leisure to explore the many layers of this iconic city.

The Volga River town of Uglich has a fascinating, if not altogether happy history. Ivan the Terrible’s infant son Dmitry was hidden here after Ivan’s death – only to be killed seven years later, triggering a period Russians call ‘The Great Disturbance’. Today’s Uglich however, is a beautiful small town that flourishes with summer visitors.

Another tale of Russian resilience awaits at Goritsy, where Polish invaders were repelled during an attempt to storm the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery. Visit the monastery and a museum of icons as you learn about its strict and devout founder, Saint Cyril on the White Lake.

What the small town of Mandrogui lacks in big attractions it makes up for in the simple charm of a village untouched by time. Between delicious meals and picturesque streets, it may well be the most authentically Russian stop on your journey. By contrast, the nearby wooden churches of Kizhi Pgost might have been lifted straight from a macabre Russian fairy tale! Indeed, their builders’ identity remains unknown. What is known is that not a single nail was used in their construction, with logs instead being shaped and fitted together with precise scribes.

Don’t tell Moscow, but Saint Petersburg is widely known as Russia’s most beautiful city and certainly its most European. Spend a full day seeing sights such as Peter and Paul Fortress, and of course, a long visit to the Hermitage Museum is a must. A range of optional evening activities are open to you including the Mariinsky opera or ballet, the Hermitage Theatre or a river and canal tour. Enjoy a full day to explore at leisure before embarking on your cruise!
